In the Junior School at St Paul’s, we offer a nurturing and dynamic curriculum designed to inspire curiosity and a love of learning. Based on the Australian Curriculum, our Junior School program includes subjects such as English, Mathematics, Integrated Studies (History, Social Sciences, Technology), Science, Christian Studies, Health and Physical Education, and Performing Arts (Visual Arts, Dance & Drama). Specialist subjects like Music and Japanese also play an important role in fostering creativity and cultural awareness.
At the beginning of each term, parents will receive a welcome email with a Curriculum Overview. This will outline the key concepts, content, and skills that will be covered in the coming weeks, helping families stay connected to their child’s learning journey.
In the early years, we focus on developing foundational reading skills. Books are sent home progressively as children develop an understanding of basic print concepts, sounds, and sight words. We encourage reading from a variety of sources as children grow in their skills, helping them build positive attitudes and refine their reading abilities.
Students in Prep to Year 3 participate in the Read Write Inc program, which focuses on phonics, phonemic awareness, spelling, grammar, comprehension, and writing. Our teaching staff run small, tailored groups based on each child’s developmental stage, ensuring targeted support for every learner.
In Junior School, we aim to foster a love for mathematics through hands-on learning, real-world problem-solving, and engaging tasks. Our daily routines, such as Number Talks, help students develop number sense, while providing opportunities for exploration and inquiry-based learning in mathematics.
Christian Studies is an integral part of our curriculum, helping students explore Christian beliefs within the framework of the Lutheran Education Australia Christian Studies Framework. The program supports both academic and spiritual development, guiding children in their understanding of values such as love, kindness, and forgiveness.
Circle Time is a key part of our relational development program in Junior School. This time allows students to share and discuss important issues such as friendships, problem-solving, and emotions. It promotes empathy, teamwork, and a sense of belonging within our school community. In the Junior School, we are committed to supporting all children in reaching their full potential. Our Learning Support team works closely with classroom teachers to identify any learning needs and provide tailored support to help each student succeed. We encourage parents to notify us of any concerns or learning needs their child may have, so we can work together to provide the best possible support.
